Mechanism of Action

Mechanism of action

Ketamine is a general non-barbituric anaesthetic, fast-acting, Intravenous.

  • or Intramuscular-administerable, resulting in a particular dissociative anaesthesia, a decrease in activity in neocortex and subcortical structures (thalamus) and an increase in activity in the limbic system and reticulate substance.

This anaesthetic state is characterized by deep and prolonged analgesia, a loss of consciousness that results more in a disconnection of the patient than in a real sleep, the preservation of pharyngeal reflexes and laryngeal reflexes, the maintenance or discreet increase of muscle tone, as well as usual cardiovascular and respiratory stimulation.

The duration of anaesthesia is variable with the dose and route of administration.

Awakening is early but a certain period is necessary before the patient has recovered an absolutely normal behavior.

It is, most often, progressive and without agitation; but in some subjects, psychomimetic phenomena with abate of the psychomimetic abitation may occur after the onset of the onset of the psychomimetic abs.
