Mechanism of Action
Mechanism of action
Rasagiline has been shown to be a potent and irreversible selective inhibitor of B-MAO that may cause an increase in extracellular dopamine concentrations in the striatum.
Increased dopamine concentration and subsequent increase in dopaminergic activity are likely responsible for the beneficial effects of rasagiline observed in dopaminergic motor dysfunction models. 1-amino-indane, the main active metabolite, is not an inhibitor of B-MAO.
