Mechanism of Action

Pharmacotherapeutic group

ANTIANEMIC PREPARATIONS – FER BASED PREPARATIONS.

  • ATC code: B03AA07.

Ferrous iron intake.

Iron is an essential mineral nutrient that has a key physiological role and is necessary in many functions such as oxygen transport, ATP production, DNA synthesis and electron transport.

Mechanism of action

Iron is a central atom of the heme.

It is a component of hemoglobin and is also essential for l-erythropoiesis.

Pharmacodynamic effects

Iron is distinguished from other minerals because its equilibrium in the human body is regulated only by its absorption because there is no physiological mechanism of excretion.

Ferrous sulphate uptake (FeSO4) is facilitated by the iron carrier (DMT1) in the proximal part of the small intestine (duodenum and proximal jejunum).
